The Floor Plan and Elevation sketch of this six-story building are shown in the following figures. The floors’ configuration is symmetrical at all levels. Assume all beams and girders are simply supported. Use E = 29.6 Ksi and I = 60,000 inch4.
Critical load information is provided for consideration and calculation. Make assumptions where necessary:
Floor Plan
Elevation
The following loads are anticipated on the floors:
Thickness of concrete slab
= 6 inches (Assume density of concrete = 150 lbs/ft3)
Weight of insulation
= 3 PSF
Weight of metal deck
= 5 PSF
Weight of shear studs
= 2 PSF
Weight of HVAC
= 6 PSF
Miscellaneous dead loads
= 10 PSF
Weight of occupants
= 120 PSF
Weight of Snow
= 15 PSF
Based on the given floor plan, identify and label beams, girders, and columns. Use the same labels for all symmetrical structural elements (for example, if two beams will carry the same load, assign them a similar label, such as B1).
Compute the total design load in PSF on each floor.
For a typical floor (all floors are similar), compute the load transferred from a floor to various beams using the concept of tributary width/area. Determine support reactions and draw corresponding shear force and bending moment diagrams of all beams. Completed diagrams should indicate values of shear and moment at each section where they are maximum positive and maximum negative. Determine maximum deflection in each beam. Neglect self-weight of the beams.
Compute load transferred from beams to various girders. Determine support reactions and draw corresponding shear force and bending moment diagrams of all girders. Neglect the self-weight of the girders.
Compute load transferred from beams and girders to various columns on each floor. Draw a sketch of each column and show this load transfer diagrammatically.
Compute the total load which will be transferred from each column to its foundation.
Recap your results in a table providing the following information:…
