Week 8 DQ 1
-Improve quality and convenience of patient care
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) can improve health care quality and make health care more convenient for providers and patients. Reliable and quick access to complete patient health information is the critical for safe and efficient care. With EHRs, patients’ medical history is available in one place, easily accessible to physicians. There is no need for patients to complete medical history forms at every doctor visits, providing convenience for patients and reducing the possibility of inaccurate information given by patients. EHRs allow physicians to send e-prescriptions directly to a pharmacy, hence, safer and reliable prescribing. Furthermore, with EHRs physicians can send lab requests and referrals electronically, providing convenience to patients and specialists. Importantly, EHRs makes accurate coding and billing possible via legible and complete documentation. EHRs can aid providers make valuable decisions about patient care through clinical alerts and reminders, real-time quality reporting and analysis of patient information.
-Increase patient participation in their care
EHRs give patients the power to be more active participants in their own health care. With, EHRs, providers and patients who share health information can work together in the decision making process. Patients can access their medical history, lab test results and follow-up care electronically. Similarly, provides can manage appointment schedules, send reminders electronically and exchange e-mail with their patients. Giving patients full access to full their full medical history encourage them to faithfully follow physicians’ instructions and evaluate their life styles and make the necessary changes accordingly. Needless to say, EHRs increase patient participation which is essential to better patient health outcomes, especially to manage chronic conditions.
-Improve care coordination
Without EHRs, teams of health care providers (primary care physicians, specialists, nurses and technicians) have fragmented view of a patient, meaning they mainly have patient’s information that pertains to their area of expertise. EHRs can reduce the fragmentation of care by improving care coordination between teams of health providers. With EHRs, every provider will have access to the same exact and up-to-date information about a patient. Accessed information include list of medications, test results, allergies, and care plans. This is particularly important with patients who are receiving medical care from multiple specialists and emergency rooms, as well as transiting between health care facilities.

NOW, here is the replay to this answer from another student:
Hi Tigest,
I enjoyed reading your post. We focused on the same aspects of the Electronic Medical Record system. In my post I found that that the benefits of each section were very similar and there was a lot of overlap in terms of the physician aspect. This overlap showed that this entity ties together all the major concerns of both the physician and the consumer. After working in a physician’s office one of the features I feel will play major role in convenience is the electronic referral system. Although the practice I worked for had this feature is was most helpful in obtaining authorizations and receiving follow up notes from the specialty visit. With the approval code, expiration date and reason for visit on the document it reduced the amount of follow up phone calls requesting this information .We also received more reports from their visit which allowed us to call and follow up with care. This cycle allowed us to provide the best possible care for the patient . This convenience lead to better coordination of care which is key especially for patients with chronic diseases who tend to see more specialists to maintain their condition. Thanks for sharing.

Mr. Holmes, I hope this example can help you to understand what I need from you.
